This exciting project will show Westray as it is now, creating its own heritage day by day.

We hope islanders, former islanders and visitors will take the opportunity to get involved by helping us to create this unique record of island life.

Future generations will be just as interested in our day-to-day life as in special events such as the Regatta, North Isles Sports and the Industrial Show. So, while pictures of those will be more than welcome, we’d like to see pictures and videos of farmers, fishermen, shop workers, firemen, teachers and builders going about their everyday business.

It's easy to get involved with this living heritage project. Here's how:

  • Check through the family albums. Pick out the best (taken since 2000) and send them into the Heritage Centre or drop them off during opening hours. Don’t forget to name everyone in the photograph and include the place and date the picture was taken.
  • E-mail photographs or videos to the centre using the upload facility. Again, don’t forget to add names, places and dates.
  • Volunteer to take photographs, record video footage or even conduct interviews. Get in touch with Malcolm at the Heritage Centre, by phone, call in or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

The project is funded by Leader, Westray Development Trust Turbine Fund and Westray Heritage Trust.
